Power of Hands has set up a workshop in Galle Fort which provides a clean and safe environment for lace makers to work in on a full time basis. The centre is the heart of a co-operative, created post Tsunami, with a network of around 80 outworkers who produce lace and other crafts in their own homes. Members of the cooperative visit the centre weekly to be paid and collect new orders. All receive decent and fair wages.
The homes of these outworkers are in very bad condition and Power of Hands Foundation are striving to help improve basic needs for these women to enable them to continue producing their craft from their home base.
The centre also has a training area where more skilled and experienced craft makers help train fellow members of the project. Designers with experience of western markets have been provided by Power of Hands to work with the lace makers and help them develop a basic range of products that will appeal to consumers in the developed world.
